ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಯದುವಂಶದ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆ :
ಅನಾದಿ ಕಾಲದಿಂದಲೂ ಮೈಸೂರು ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ರೂಢಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಂತೆ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಯಾವಾಗ ಈ ಹೆಸರು ಈ ಸೀಮೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತವಾಯಿತೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.
ಅನಾದಿ ಕಾಲದಿಂದಲೂ ಮೈಸೂರು ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ರೂಢಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಂತೆ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಯಾವಾಗ ಈ ಹೆಸರು ಈ ಸೀಮೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತವಾಯಿತೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.
ಪಾಂಡವರ ಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಪ್ರಾಂತವನ್ನು ಮಾಹಿಷ್ಮತಿ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತೆಂದು ಶಾಸನ ತಜ್ಞ ಬಿ.ಎಲ್. ರೈಸ್‌ರವರು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸಾಮ್ರಾಟ ಅಶೋಕನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಸೀಮೆಗೆ ಮಹಿಷ ಮಂಡಲವೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಶೋಕ ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿ ಬೌದ್ಧಧರ್ಮ ಪ್ರಚಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಮಹಾದೇವ ಎಂಬುವನನ್ನು ಮಹಿಷ ಮಂಡಲಕ್ಕೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.
