Komazawa Olympic Park is not a #JapaneseGarden. Yet it is a good example for highlighting the connection between #TokyoOlympics 1964 and invented traditions. Planners included a couple of references to J-garden culture at this second main site of 64. #weeklyJG, #日本庭園 1/4 
To conceal concrete structures, they employed pruned shrubs (karikomi), which had become popular in the 17th century. Tiny stone-gardens were scattered over the park, often in surprising spots – and look sometimes very much out of place. 2/4
Ashihara Yoshinobu, one of the main architects, surrounded his Komazawa Gymnasium with a “sunken garden” and placed a concrete pagoda as reference to Buddhism on the main plaza. Komazawa Olympic Park, though being modern at the core, thus got a strong oriental touch. 3/4
