India's vote against the #UNGeneralAssembly draft resolution on #deathpenalty is disappointing. India's defence that it uses death penalty only in the "rarest of rare" cases is contrary to the new laws that it has passed that expand the scope of use of death penalty in India.

In April this year, #deathpenalty was introduced for the rape of girls aged 12 or younger. Activists have said these laws endanger child rape survivors, and serve as a distraction from the poor implementation of laws on sexual violence against children.

The Uttar Pradesh government passed a law on December 2017 that introduced the #deathpenalty for people convicted of dealing in spurious liquor whose consumption led to loss of life.

A total of 123 UN member states – the highest number on record to date – voted today in favour of the proposal, mirroring recent increases in the number of countries that have abolished the death penalty in law or practice globally.

It is high time that the Government of India consigns the death penalty to the history books, instead of falsely claiming that it improves public safety. #deathpenalty
