#LisaMontgomery is the first woman to be executed by the federal government since Ethel Rosenberg in 1953 and the 11th prisoner to be executed by the Trump DOJ since Trump resumed the federal #deathpenalty in July.

Although Lisa Montgomery had a long history of mental illness and severe sexual trauma, the court found that data should have been presented sooner. Montgomery's attorney had pleaded for commutation of her sentence to life in prison.

Few global democracies still utilize the death penalty. And while the DP remains on the books in some, actual executions are mostly carried out in nations we consider rogue states or authoritarian. The #deathpenalty is state-sanctioned murder applied with no consistency.

People...

@JoeBiden MUST end the use of the Federal Death Penalty....It was LITERALLY part of HIS #cjreform plan during the campaign....it was also LITERALLY part of the @KamalaHarris #cjreform plan

These were the promises they made, not some wild demand from outsiders

[Thread] Wrong, @FrMatthewLC. Your argument is based on the false premise that the primary purpose of the #DeathPenalty is the protection of society from dangerous criminals. That is secondary. The primary purpose is to punish the guilty as an act of retributive justice.
God Himself makes this principle of retributive justice quite clear in Genesis, something He *requires* (not suggests) for upholding the dignity of man: "Whosoever shall shed man's blood, his blood shall be shed: for man was made to the image of God." (Gen. 9:6)
No amount of sophistry can deny the immutable legitimacy of #CapitalPunishment. Scripture and Tradition are clear. Aquinas is clear. The Roman Catechism is clear. *No one*, including @Pontifex, can validly claim that a precept of divine and natural law is now "inadmissible".

Even if they support the #DeathPenalty, most people think that only people who've killed should be killed.

🔴Prosecutors never claimed #DustinHiggs killed anyone, but #Barr has scheduled him to die 5 days before inauguration. Deeply moving video: /thread vimeo.com/194702182
#DustinHiggs was in his early 20s when he drove a shooter from a crime scene. Prosecutors said the shooter "acted alone," but they failed to get the #DeathPenalty. So they accused Higgs of being the mastermind.

The shooter got life w/ no parole. Higgs is to die on 1/15/21.
Jurors did NOT hear mitigating factors that might've led them to choose death in prison by no parole over execution. They didn't know he was 10 when he was his mother's f/t caretaker as she died of breast cancer. Nor did they know he has learning & developmental disabilities.

✔️Trump & #Barr are on a #KillingSpree. The official cause of death for executions is homicide.

If there are no more stays, they'll have killed 13 in 7 months compared to 3 in the 222 months since McVeigh's execution in June 2001. | thread
Dept of Justice website: "There is no proof that the #DeathPenalty deters criminals."

Death in prison by no parole (not execution) saves +/-$1 million per case. The capital punishment error rate is 1 in 10: 1 exoneration for every 9 executions. nij.ojp.gov/topics/article…

After convicting them of lynching a teenager in one of Baghdad's protest encampments last year, a Baghdad court sentenced six protesters to death.
Leaderless demonstrations against endemic corruption, soaring unemployment and weak public services erupted in Iraq in October 2019.
Protesters have called for a reform of the constitutional structure that has been in place since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that overthrew Saddam Hussein. During the months-long campaign in Baghdad and other cities in the central and southern parts of the country,

The U.S Marshals added that they were able to arrest several individuals while recovering the children, including an adult male who was charged with aggravated statutory rape.

A mother wanted on a first-degree murder warrant in Mississippi was also arrested during the sting.

Let me remind you, @realDonaldTrump, of your horrific record of #racism. You wanted to reinstate the #DeathPenalty for the #CentralParkFive. In 2016, you claimed they were still guilty, despite exonerating DNA evidence.
1. 1973: Trump refused to rent to black tenants; lied to blacks about vacancies
2. Black workers ordered off the floor when he visited Trump's Castle
3. 1988: Said countries "like Japan" were hurting the economic dignity of the US. Wonder who the hell wrote THAT for him?
4. 1969: After the Central Park 5 were accused of raping a NYC jogger he took out ad in local papers: "BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY. BRING BACK OUR POLICE!" After the convictions were overturned, NYC paid a $41M settlement.

I'd like to share the story of Iwuchukwu Amara Tochi, a young Nigerian footballer.

In 2007, at the age of 21, Tochi was hanged in #Singapore.
Tochi was arrested in Changi Airport in #Singapore on 27 November 2004. He was 18 years old.

He was later charged with importing not less than 727.02g of heroin. His case largely revolved around whether he could rebut the presumption clauses within the Misuse of Drugs Act.
What are these presumption clauses? First: if you have more than 2g of heroin, Section 17 of #Singapore's Misuse of Drugs Act (here: sso.agc.gov.sg/Act/MDA1973#pr…) presumes that you are trafficking the drugs.

Some thoughts after observing the hearing for Syed Suhail bin Syed Zin today. Screenshots from my Facebook page since it's long and not particularly conducive to a thread. #deathpenalty #Singapore ImageImageImageImage
And one on what we know about how death row inmates' clemency petitions are considered in #Singapore.

tl;dr We don't know anything Image
Ultimately, I was very glad that the Court of Appeal decided to give both sides time to file further submissions, and that the next hearing will not take place before 7 October, thus giving Syed more time with his family. But these are the points I'm not pondering.

In 2018, #Singapore Prison Service forwarded 4 letters Syed wrote to his uncle + 1 letter he wrote to his then-DEFENCE COUNSEL to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

At that time, Syed’s capital case was before the Court of Appeal. AGC was the prosecution. wethecitizens.substack.com/p/when-the-pri…
The Community Action Network and #Singapore Anti-#DeathPenalty Campaign have issued a statement: singaporecan.wordpress.com/2020/09/20/que…

There needs to be an independent investigation into and accounting for this clear breach of inmates’ privacy, and in Syed’s case, solicitor-client privilege.
From an August 2020 Court of Appeal judgment, we learn that this wasn’t an isolated case. Another death row inmate, Datchinamurthy, complained that the prison had, w/o consent, forwarded to the AGC documents given to him by his family.

Here's an FAQ on the #deathpenalty for #drugs in #Singapore, covering the basic mechanics of how it works and also my responses to common questions and comments. wethecitizens.substack.com/p/faq-the-deat…
Here's a summary of the whirlwind past few days:
- Syed Suhail bin Syed Zin was scheduled to hang on 18 Sept (today), but was granted a stay of execution. His next court hearing is 22nd September, but @MRavilaw has another application to make after that.
- While it's a relief that Syed got a stay, we don't know how much time that will actually translate to, so it's important that people still keep talking about his case, writing to their MPs, and signing this petition: change.org/p/singapore-an…

One of the most sickening things about the #deathpenalty is how cold and administrative is. I wrote about this in 2017, but have never felt like I've been able to convey the full horror of it: ricemedia.co/culture-life-a… Something that happened last night provides another example...
Last night I received a call from @MRavilaw, the human rights lawyer representing Syed Suhail pro bono. Earlier in the day, Ravi had succeeded in getting an interim stay of execution from the High Court. The news went around social media, to lots of people's relief.
But as I was riding the bus home at the end of the day, @MRavilaw called to say that the prison had *not* confirmed that the execution was on hold, and that Syed appeared to still be under the impression that he was to say his goodbyes and the family to prepare his funeral.

THREAD ⬇️

Following on from yesterday's thread, I'd like to talk a bit about the clemency process in #Singapore in relation to the #deathpenalty.
Under Article 22P of the Constitution of #Singapore, the President is able to, on the advice of the Cabinet (this bit is important), grant clemency to death row inmates. This is usually understood to mean that the President will commute the death sentence to life imprisonment. Image
There's a catch: the words "on the advice of the Cabinet". In 2011, the Court of Appeal ruled that this means the President must act according to what the Cabinet says. Essentially, while it is known as a presidential pardon, it is actually the Cabinet of #Singapore that decides.

Why are many, if not the majority, of #deathpenalty cases amounting to arbitrary executions, whether carried out in #Iran, #SaudiArabia the #UnitedStates or elsewhere? This is a long thread providing some explanations.
International law imposes severe restrictions on the use of death penalty and demands strict safeguards. Non-compliance with these restrictions and safeguards leads to arbitrary and thus unlawful deprivation of life.
The imposition of #deathpenalty in a manner that is contrary to the International Covenant on Civil or Political Rights (e.g. fair trial, prohibition against torture, prohibition against discrimination, etc.) would automatically translate into the execution being deemed arbitrary

#Singapore continues to defend hangings, usually carried out for drug trafficking and murder. Syed Suhail has been scheduled to hang on Friday. In a letter, he said that he will not be able to see his Malaysian relatives due to #COVID19 border closures. vice.com/en_us/article/…
Earlier today, human rights lawyer M Ravi published a letter that Syed Suhail bin Syed Zin had written to him about his imminent execution. #deathpenalty #Singapore Image
Even as the world moves away from the #deathpenalty, #Singapore continues to insist on not just capital punishment but also the #WaronDrugs. From my observation, the majority of death row inmates have been sentenced to hang for drug offences.
