Okay, in the wake of the #prorep #FPTP vote, here's our exit poll of voters, canvassing their motivations: angusreid.org/electoral-refo…
Some reflections on the referendum coming, follow along..
1) The result is a massive relief to the @bcliberals. They can also claim a very legitimate "win" in this campaign. Look at how solidly past BC lib votes stuck together on #FPTP
2) Majorities of past @bcndp and @BCGreens, in turn, chose #prorep, but there these blocks were less overwhelming in in their support for change:
3) Age (surprise surprise) also appears to have been a big driver among the voters we canvassed (n=646). Older voters overwhelmingly chose #fptp, while the millennials were all about #PropRep
4) So what were some of the other motivations? #proprep voters really believed their vote would matter more:
5) And the #FPTP base was firmly of the conviction that a change would lead to more minority governments that they DID NOT want:
6) There was a lot of polarization among #PropRep and #FPTP voters over whether the vote was even needed:
7) Now this is interesting. the ultimately failed #proprep lobby truly believed democracy would be way better under PR:
8) the #FPTP folks OTOH, were under no illusions that sticking with the status quo would be amazing... but they did see it as the best system we have:
9) some thoughts on the political fallout now ...
Ultimately, this was the @BCGreens baby. The party wasn't able to seel the benefits of change. While @jjhorgan campaigned for #PropRep his heart didn't seem to be in it.
10) A lot of @bcliberals folks I've talked to seem to think the referendum result will mean an election soon for BC. I could be wrong, but I don't.
11) Regardless of the outcome, this coalition with the @bcndp is a big deal for the @BCGreens ... do they really want to quit their seat of influence and be blamed for ANOTHER election? That no one is asking for?
12) Yes, the @bcliberals will take a victory lap on this. They delivered their vote. The @bcndp looks sheepish for not doing the same, but also, I don't think they really care & feel decent about their chances IF an election were called.
