Many had for years endured abuse ranging from sexual comments, unwanted touching to pressuring students into sexual relationships for years, afraid to challenge teachers in in South Korea's deeply patriarchal and hierarchical society.
They came up with their own defenses -- block your chest with a textbook, wear gym pants under your uniform skirt.
Dozens of teachers have been fired, several criminally prosecuted. One middle school teacher was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison for assaulting a student over an eight-month period.
The movement really gathered steam after students at one private girl's high school in northeast Seoul spelled out '#MeToo' 'We can do anything' and '#WithYou' in giant letters made out of post-it notes across three floors of their school last spring:
