Let's remember this cop academy has NOTHING TO DO with bringing jobs or economic investment to the west side, nor to Black communities #NoCopAcademy
The contractor AECOM and the city's own records show the building of the academy will bring 110 temporary construction jobs to Garfield Park, and only 15% of those are required to be "local resident" hires #NoCopAcademy
That's less than 20 temporary jobs for a community with massive unemployment and 40% of residents living below the poverty line #NoCopAcademy
Economic justice does not look like temporary jobs constructing a monument to the racist CPD in the same ward where #LaquanMcDonald is from. This would be a deep disrespecting of his name, and of all the other Black youth CPD has killed #NoCopAcademy
#NoCopAcademy canvassers conducted their own survey of Garfield Park residents last year. 86% of those canvassed said this is not the kind of investment they want made in their community
They did want investments in public schools, childcare and after school programs, the arts, community gardens, and so much more. These things bring jobs, too, and are actually aligned with the vision the majority of residence have for their hood #NoCopAcademy
Here's a summary of the report #NoCopAcademy published after canvassing 500 Garfield Park residents last year (in reference to the 86% statistic cited above) nocopacademy.com/report/
