I think a lot of Australians struggle to understand that what they recognise as racism is just the tip of the iceberg... #ElimateRacism
Eg, we didn’t say ‘White Australians’ there but I’m guessing most of you knew that’s what we meant, and likely didn’t consciously pause to reflect on the absence of the word ‘white’. Whiteness is the norm in Australia. If no race is given, whiteness can usually be safely assumed.
That’s why the question “Is Australia racist?” is so comical... well, we live in a country where most ppl assume it means ‘white Australia’ and answer it from that perspective, but are also unaware they did that or that it’s a huge problem that this is how it works, so ‘yep’?
Also, this... this is so common.
The normalisation of whiteness has been of great benefit to white Australia, and this is why so many white ppl now think that offering this racial invisibility to others is the goal eg ‘I don’t see race’, but we’re several centuries too late for that to be an effective solution.
