53% of poor children are aged under 5 (up from 51%) - that’s more than 2 million children 2/
200,000 more children in absolute poverty (after housing costs). 3/
Risk of poverty for children in families with 3 or more children up from 32% in 2012 to 43% (AHC). 4/
The 4 year freeze on children’s benefits alone (child benefit and child elements in tax credits and universal credit) will lead to average loses of £240 per year for families with children and will result in 100,000 more children in poverty by 2023-24. 5/
"Today’s poverty figures make grim reading with more than 4.1 million children still in poverty and a jump in the proportion of poor children in working families. The increase in child poverty in working families was widely anticipated and could have been avoided." 6/
We must “turn the tide of child poverty again. In the short term this means ending the benefit freeze, restoring the losses that have pulled families into poverty and rebuilding cross-party support for a comprehensive child poverty strategy. Today’s kids deserve nothing less." 7/
