What is #DistractedDriving? According to @NHTSAgov, a distraction is a specific type of inattention that occurs when drivers divert their attention from the driving task to focus on some other activity instead.

In Oregon, the law says it’s illegal to drive while holding or using a mobile electronic device (e.g. cell phone, tablet, GPS, laptop).

Here are some exceptions to phone usage while driving:
-Using hands-free/built-in devices, if 18 years of age or older.
-When parked safely, at the side of the road or in a parking spot. (Being stopped for lights, signs & traffic DOESN’T count)

-Making a call to provide or summon medical help and no one else is available.
-Use of a mobile electronic device by police, fire, EMS providers in the scope of employment.

Here are the fines for driving distracted:
1st offense: up to $1000
2nd offense or 1st offense that contributes to a crash: up to $2000
3rd offense: up to $2500 and/or up to 6 months in jail
