Now up are @editingemily and @nicolefv talking about “Why should I care about DevRel anyway?”
#VelocityConf

This is a game show style session modeled after Jeopardy... with gifs.

First question: do you need to be a Twitter celeb?

Nope! It’s great to be able to magnify voices of those that might not have a megaphone. But not essential, some of the best aren’t public.

What is DevRel anyway?

@editingemily - I like to think of us as the API between developers and the product team! Also, there’s a lot of talking.

#VelocityConf

Also a it’s highly dependent on the company. Generally there’s development involved, there’s talking, and community management.

#VelocityConf

What’s the value of DevRel for the company?

Having good engagement with customers drives better outcomes. Profitability and customer satisfaction.

On the soft side: brand recognition.

#VelocityConf

Measuring success in DevRel will always depend on the outcomes you are targeting. Is it product usage, customer engagement, brand awareness?

All of these are measurable but which one is important depends. Use multiple measures though so it doesn’t get gamed.

#VelocityConf

Why 🥑?

It comes from Developer Advocate... Developer Avocado.

Also, DevRel is a an investment... like growing avocados. Starting DevRel and expecting results in weeks won’t work out.

What if you aren’t selling a tech product? What relationship does DevRel have with technical recruitment?

A ton! Non-traditional tech companies are solving awesome problems but without DevRel no one knows. DevRel improves tech brand awareness and helps recruit.

#VelocityConf

I *love* the DevRel-recruitment connection. I feel that most want to work somewhere that is making a meaningful impact *and* is working on challenging tech problems.

How would the dev community know you do the latter if you don’t talk about it?
