Really excited for this talk by Morgan Weever - Inclusivity Power-Up: Lessons Learned Mentoring Formerly Incarcerated Software Engineers.

It's a group you don't hear about much in DEI.

#vGHC20 For this community mentorship isn't just about the technical knowledge (which is important) but there are some specialized needs for career growth. Additionally, imposter syndrome (a big issue in tech) can weigh heavy for formerly incarcerated individuals.

Next on the schedule today is a workshop: Breathing Life into ERGs: the Impact of a Pandemic and a Racial Justice Movement.

Hoping I can stay concentrated on this session - I've been losing the WFH distraction battle today.

#vGHC #GHC20 Had issues joining via web so I'm going mobile. In to the panel just in time for intros whew! Moira Bohannon, Mercedes Hall and Patreece Spence are all speakers with Beth Dickerson hosting. All from Elsevier.

Definitely appreciate the intros including pronouns

Next session at #vGHC20 for me is pretty pertinent: Male Allies: The One "DEI" Thing a Male Ally Can Do Today - a panel including Glenn Block, David Graham, Jason Thompson, and Jeremiah Chan.

Note: DEI == Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

#vGHC20 #ghc2020 Sobering stat: study by the patent office 12.8% of patent inventors are women. The percentage growth in this area is actually slowing down.. only 2% growth in 15+ years.

This isn't just about recognition for patent creation there's a financial impact as well.

I'm *really* excited about the next session on my list: Applying Accessibility and Gender Sensitive Design Strategy to API Design with Anwesha Bhattacharjee.

I tend to think of Accessibility == UX so it will be great to see a take on service build out.

#GHC20 #vGHC2020 Dr. Anwesha reiterates my original take: this isn't just about UX. She's a Product Manager at Hopper and formerly a data scientist.

Time for a live recording of @ArrestedDevOps with @bridgetkromhout @0x74696d @soandsos and @peterjshan #devopsdaysphilly Image Ethics in software development can be tricky - data may be used in unintended ways. As software devs it’s not always easy to think of these possibilities when we are so focused on delivering “the service.” #devopsdaysphilly

Now up are @editingemily and @nicolefv talking about “Why should I care about DevRel anyway?”
#VelocityConf Image This is a game show style session modeled after Jeopardy... with gifs.

First question: do you need to be a Twitter celeb?

Nope! It’s great to be able to magnify voices of those that might not have a megaphone. But not essential, some of the best aren’t public.

First talk on the leadership track is @BethAdeleLong talking about “Having the Bubble: How Experts Build, Maintain, and Spread Deep System Knowledge”

#VelocityConf Image We are going to focus on the Experts that are using and maintaining our systems.

Why is this important? Experts are the least understood aspects of our systems!

Work by @ddwoods2 and @ri_cook is significant influence in all we’ll be talking about today.

First talk up is @lizthegrey talking about Production Excellence.

#VelocityConf Image If you haven’t read @lizthegrey’s opus on Sustainable Operations, go take a break after the keynotes and read it. Should be mandatory if you own a service or product.

“Observability for developers: How to get from here to there” with @cyen!

#VelocityConf Image We are talking a bit about the Dev/Ops wall and @cyen’s experience of developing *so* fast... and how that sometimes turns into the stereotype of devs breaking things.

Next up: @jessitron with “From puzzles to Products”

Puzzles are just a stepping stone to the “real work” of your product.

#VelocityConf ImageImage Puzzles can be well defined problems - products aren’t well defined. They’re an evolution and ongoing dialogue with customers to determine the puzzles needing to be solved. This is further reinforced by puzzles already solved by the “Rest of the World”

A quick reminder and a thread regarding the @MarriottBonvoy power outage at #VelocityConf:

1) Just because Marriott isn’t a traditional tech company doesn’t mean they don’t deserve #hugops. This has to be just as rough for the employees as the guests

1/n ImageImage 2) #VelocityConf attendees think of this as an awesome opportunity to think through how you would approach a post-incident review for the event. Who would you talk to? What questions would you ask? How would you maintain a blameless culture?

My take continues...
