I want to talk about something. It's going to piss a lot of partisans off, but I don't really care because it is really bothering me. Opposing bigotry goes way beyond partisanship for me. That's why I have a long record of consistently opposing it on both side.
I know it when I see it. It's one of the reasons I was so critical of Trump in 2015/2016 for his flirtations with the alt-right. As a result, I received near daily abuse and harassment from them. Not just tweets, but also real threats against me and my family.
It's why I spoke out against the campaign Muslim ban, against his attacks on Judge Curiel, against Steve King, against some of his rhetoric regarding Hispanics etc etc.
Those attacks weren't aimed at me, but I know where the acceptance of bigotry against some leads.
And yet now we several popular politicians on the left who are open bigots. They happen to be bigots whose bigotry is aimed at people like me. So it's very dispiriting when I watch institutions like the press and even supposedly honest actors on the left simply excuse/ignore it.
The same that would cheer and parrot my criticism of the right are just silent when it comes to calling it out on the left. Now I didn't do it for them, but because it's the right thing to do.
But it's still deflating to watch/experience. Especially given the stakes.
Tlaib and Omar are antisemites. You can accept it or ignore it, but the record speaks for itself. If you choose to ignore it, you simply don't have credibility on the topic of bigotry anymore.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of people with major platforms choosing that route.
That credibility might seem like a small thing, but it is valuable over time. When major institutions like the press lose it, very hard to get it back & has major consequences on what becomes normal in our society.
It's sad we are going down this path, but y'all are choosing it.
I’m not sure I did a good job conveying my point in this thread, but I’ll put it this way: If you keep covering for Omar and Tlaib, you can’t act surprised when people ignore your warning about the next Steve King.
