A lot of people ask me if I use the expand targeting option.

I've always said no because I tested it last year and saw bad results.

However, I wanted to give it another try.

So, in this thread I'll explain what it is and why I'm testing it again.

**Expand Targeting Thread**

Expand Targeting is an option that allows you to potentially increase your audience if FB thinks it can get you a conversion at a lower cost.

The reason why I say potentially is because it's not always going to be increasing your audience size.

FB will only increase your audience size when they think there is a higher chance elsewhere.

FB of course keeps us in the dark and provides us no info on the audience it expands to, how many times it expands, what actually triggers an expansion, etc.

It sucks I know.

It's frustrating not being able to understand it fully but that's FB for ya.

Even with some uncertainty I still wanted to test it again to see if I would get the same results as last time.

When I tested it last time my normal campaigns outperformed the test campaigns.

With the expand interest campaigns I was getting much cheaper traffic.

Meaning my cpms/cpc were lower, but my CPA was higher compared to my core campaigns.

Which makes sense since FB would be showing my ads to a bigger/broader audience so the quality of traffic would decrease.

I'm currently testing this again and a similar thing is happening but no where near the same degree.

Granted it's important to understand I'm testing it on different accounts than I tested last year.

So, it's technically not the most scientific experiment just so you know.

However, it's exciting to see profitable performance with the expand targeting option on because I think it will make it easier to scale accounts.

This is the reason why I wanted to test it again in the first place.

If the performance of my test continues in the same direction, I think it's going to help make scaling accounts a little bit easier.

It should help increase the freshness of audiences and keep the first time impression ratio high allowing more spending on the same audience.

So, I'm excited to see what happens over the next couple of weeks with this test.

And to be clear I'm not recommending for you to turn on the option on all your campaigns.

But I do think its worth testing in some capacity.

FB ads are only getting more expensive, so it's important to keep testing any and all things that could potentially help reduce your costs.
