Good question. In the past there were times it could take a while to cross, like early am, when ppl go to work in the us. But I’ve never been in a stand still line 4 wide at the beginning of the bridge - which is several hundred yards long
The us under trump unilaterally has created a secondary checkpoint at the exact border instead of at the offices at the end, in order to keep people from making asylum claims. But that slows down traffic a lot. Still this is nuts
So the fake border guards at the middle of the bridge are just randomly halting the line. I’m on the other side now but it’s still crazy long. I’m assuming they have 2 agents checking passports in the office. Purposefully understaffing the checkpoints is increasingly common
And when I say purposeful I mean “you can see 10 agents standing around watching while two check passports for 500 people” kind of a thing.
You’ll be shocked to learn that the people this effects most are Mexican Americans who’s entire lives straddle the border, with work and family and sporting events and weddings etc etc on both sides.
There’s 10 car lines but only 3 are open, and traffic is backed up in Juarez for a mile (I walked it’s entire length) not to mention the feeder streets near the border that are jammed with cars.
And here’s the thing. There could be a perfectly good, reasonable explanation for this. But because of how the admin has treated immigrants and Latinos, nobody will ever believe that if it were true - which to be clear is doubtful.
A guy just passed out and slammed his head against the metal railing. We’ve been standing out here in the heat for an hour. The one silver lining, and it’s a grim one to be sure, is that he’s white and maybe that’ll make them start letting people through more quickly.
And yes, I am aware at how fucked up that sounds, but this is 2019 and hard ass reality is that the hundreds of brown old people and children dealing with this sure as hell aren’t gonna tug on official heart strings
A guy walked down to look inside and wonders of wonders, they only have one lane open to check passports. For at least a thousand people. Hurray American exceptionalism!
waiting in this line is nothing compared to the months we’re making people who have been raped and tortured in their home countries wait to even go in the building to ask for asylum. But if this is what American citizens have to go through on a regular ass Sunday night ...
