One take away from @mayorcantrell's press conference that I hope doesn't get lost -- there isn't any widespread looting going on. The police say they've arrested "a few" people and charged them with looting, but we still don't knew what even those arrests were about. too often words like looting get applied in disasters or other events in which people — almost always black — are either trying to just survive, or to paint a whole city or population as violent animals when in fact, very few people were doing what you'd reasonably call looting

The thing about what’s going on in Portland right now is that CBP are almost everywhere. Their jurisdiction extends within 100 miles of the border or an international port of entry , so for instance they’re in Kansas City, St. Louis, Nashville... Granted, most are on the southern border. But they are one of the largest paramilitary organizations on earth, and certainly the most well equipped. And they’re entire ethos is based around violence. They’re essentially staged throughout the entire country.

This is a great @AdamSerwer joint on how, once it was clear covid was killing black and brown people more, racists started calling for an end to efforts to control it and insisting it was patriotic and right to sacrifice “some” lives. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/… And it’s important that all of us who are of the melanin challenged persuasion to not simply nod along gravely and go about our lives. Or tweet outrage about how this is bad or “this is not America.” Because, obviously it’s bad, and more obviously it is exactly who we are.

The current millisecond news cycle environment is wildly unprepared and reckless when it comes to covering the development of vaccines and treatments for things like covid. These drugs/treatments need an enormous amount of testing, and retesting, and retesting of the retesting And because so much of this is done by companies with profit margins on their minds, they’re subject to being pimped by PR departments far more aggressively than the science would dictate, which is catnip for reporters and producers working in an overstressed underfunded news biz

Hey @mayorcantrell before doing this why don’t you fix my street like yall promised? Get some new pumps? nobody care that you work in a rat infested dump except you. But my neighbors and me care a lot about our cars not being destroyed b/c y’all are incompetent And @mayorcantrell as somebody who’s covered politics for more than 20 years, I sincerely hope you fire whatever moron came up with this idea or allowed you to contemplate it longer than it took to tell you no. Just from the optics this is mind numblingly stupid

Y’all, I just ate one of the most delicious things ever. Chicken gizzards and octopus bathed in butter and cherry vinegar. Chef Alejandro at Campobaja in CDMX is a goddamn wizard I would sacrifice most of you people to Satan using a dull spork if it meant I could eat my dude’s food everyday.

If the New York Times could go one goddamn year without writing some lazy, wrong bullshit story about another city, that would great. You fucking New York clowns elected Giuliani, Bloomberg, and Deblasio mayor. Sit down and shut the fuck up. Y’all let Guy fucking Fieri put a restaurant in your town AND THEN acted like snide hipsters and declared it ironically cool when the rest of us pointed and laughed.

An update on Margaret the LGBT Ugandan ICE is trying to deport. ICE is now transferring her to another facility, despite her lawyer being here and she still has an appeal. They haven’t told Margaret or her lawyer where yet rollingstone.com/politics/polit… This is a pretty common tactic for ICE. Shuffling asylum seekers around makes it harder for them and their lawyers to put together an effective case. It also prevents anyone from seeing them really, unless their lawyer can travel to where they’re moved to.

relocated from The Tap to another bar, and am currently listening to some rich white guys trading stories of their travel privilege - in a border city that has become ground zero for Trump’s war on immigrants. Some of their stories are bravado garbage, but still it’s jarring Like all good rich white dudes, there’s a lot of tough guy nonsense about how they told CBP guys to fuck themselves or cracked wise about something at a checkpoint. None of which happened, cause like all good rich white guys they’re too chicken shit to step over the line they see

Facebook doesn’t actually carr about your privacy. What they care about is gaining total control of all your data and gaining blanket immunity for however it uses it. Because your data is worth billions of dollars to them This is a huge red flag for a lot of the stuff they and Google are pushing under the guise of privacy, stuff with jargony names like banning 3rd party cookies. That’s tech broese for consolidating all of your user data in their hands

Ive been ok with ads for a while, even before I got laid off cause my company wasn’t making as much money as the rich guys who own it wanted do to low as revenue. People need to get paid. I get it. This, for instance, is fine. What’s not ok are either the same 6 ads with Flo and that creepy pedophile guy (LOOKING AT YOU HULU) or just random shit from cotton seed companies or just garbage ads poorly designed that fuck with the general experience cause they so clearly don’t belong on the platform

Women reporters deal with constant death and rape threats, particularly women who cover sports. This is completely unacceptable, and the Astros' efforts to gaslight the reporters in response to this story are even worse. si.com/mlb/2019/10/22… Sports has always been a reflection of our culture and politics, as much as the overlords of ESPN and other outlets would like to pretend otherwise. Which is why the transparent effort to gaslight these reporters and pretend the obvious thing never happened is so disturbing

I’m at @GUPolitics to watch Mark Zuckerberg opine about “free expression” by answering prescreened questions before a tightly controlled audience. Somehow doubt he’ll get to why Facebook is crippling the news industry by stripping all our revenue #savejournalism If you’d like to see some of the proposals @savethenews has come up with to fix this problem, we’ve put them on our site savejournalism.org/2019/10/09/sav…

excited to announce a new Kickstarter from @savethenews to help underwrite some freelancers. @LEBassett and I hope we can eventually expand this program, which will provide funding to freelancers working on stories about the state of journalism thehill.com/policy/technol… specifically we're looking to help with the cost of reporting out stories on news deserts, the effect Digital Robber Barons like Google and Facebook have had on our industry, how local news outlets have helped protect their communities from the powerful, etc.

Its always the rich, effete dudes who go all in on these performative “I AM A VERY VIRILE HETEROSEXUAL MAN WHO IS NOT ACTUALLY FANCY AND RICH” antics. Which is odd cause nobody believes this shit, nobody cares that you’re rich and fancy, and raises questions of why are you so goddamn concerned with other people’s personal ass shit?

New Orleans is such a creative, insane place. And our community encourages that, especially with young people. @_YAYAInc is helping new generations of artists find their voice, and has incredibly talented teachers like Jim Vella, one of the worlds greatest glass blowers And when I say “one of the worlds greatest glass blowers” I mean that literally. Despite his terrible sideburns, he’s a master artisan who loves not only his work but teaching kids this beautiful, disciplined chaos of an art form.

You’d think by now Jon would have realized that pretending there are 2 legitimate sides to something that is clearly illegal and contrary to every political and social norm isn’t being neutral, it’s doing exactly what one side wants. A neutral way of saying this might be “Trump hopes by constantly doing unethical and illegal acts in public and in private, and hurling conspiracy theories at the public, it will sour on impeachment and politics generally. Thus giving the GOP cover to protect his presidency”

Anyway today seems very stressful for everyone, so here’s some cool pictures of an abandoned hacienda in the middle of goddamn nowhere Chihuahua, Mexico. It appears to have been taken over by someone else who built a second building that’s some sort of club house type thing. We ~think~ narcos but the caretakers who watch the cattle herd weren’t sure

I don’t know who needs to hear this but Donald Trump is going to be president when you wake up tomorrow, and every other day that sweet sleep releases you to the clutches of cold reality for the foreseeable future. Anyway, happy Nancy Pelosi Did A Kinda Sorta Thing Day!
