This is a nice thread from a human kindness perspective, but it highlights a big flaw in the green activist argument. The biggest proponents, when taking any non-green action, always have a "good reason" for doing it "this time."

For example, a big time activist flying to UN Climate Conference will stress the importance of his or her work to the cause, that it was a necessary evil in the broader war. Or in the Prince's case, a private jet is okay because of need and an offset. As if neutral = reduction.

It isn't about hypocrisy, no one cares about hypocrisy. The point is that they actually see modern conveniences exactly like everyone else does. As a convenience to used when you have a reason. When they think they can justify it, they do it. Just like everyone.

But most of what they propose involves you and I not being allowed to make that judgment call. That THIS time it's okay because I have to visit my parents. This time it's okay because electricity keeps me safe. Your reasons for owning your car or running AC don't matter.

Green activists always have a "reason" they think is good enough for not being "green." Everyone does. But they don't think YOUR reasons are good enough. And you aren't rich and powerful like they are.

I admire Elton John's commitment and caring here. And this doesn't make him bad or a hypocrite. He had a good reason. Which is exactly the point. He actually does have good reason for his carbon footprint.
