Regarding "Imagine if Duke 3D got censored in 1996..."' and all that jazz. It did. There was a special version made to be sold in Wal-Mart (biggest retail @ the πŸ•™) with permanently enabled parental lock (remeber that? Duke 3D actually had a parental lock feature to begin with!).

Shadow Warrior got censored in the UK, they also changed shurikens into freaking *darts*. NAM had to have it's entire title changed to Napalm to be sold in Wal-Mart (???). The 90s weren't some kind of a gaming utopia.

My point is none of this is new. Happened *plenty* in the 90s for various reasons with different outcomes. Don't forget your history.
