We looked at how women are hired and paid inside 2020 presidential campaigns.

Examining FEC and internal campaign data, we isolated salaried senior leadership within the campaigns for 6 women & top polling men. Here’s what we found: (thread)

politico.com/story/2019/08/…

Women running for president filled nearly 60% of senior leadership with women

Top polling men filled 54 % of those posts will women

A review of top salaries for those posts show pay equity almost across the board.

Elizabeth Warren's senior management team is majority female: 7 women, 6 men.

They are all paid the exact same annual salary: $156,000.

Pete Buttigieg regularly audits campaign salaries to make sure there is pay equality.

Across Buttigieg's campaign (300 employees) women are paid $1.11 to every $1 men are paid, according to Buttigieg aides.

“On behalf of all the women who have worked on campaigns, it is about fucking time that this has happened — and you can quote me on that," – that's @anacaprana, who ran @HillaryClinton's 2016 super Pac.

@anacaprana @HillaryClinton @BernieSanders' senior salaried staff: six women and five men.

@anacaprana @HillaryClinton @BernieSanders .@JoeBiden's senior salaried staff: 5 of 8 positions are filled by women.

@anacaprana @HillaryClinton @BernieSanders @JoeBiden Campaign managers were a different story.
In 2020 presidentials, we've seen a drop in campaign managers since historic midterms.
27% of 2020 campaigns had women campaign managers
40% of 2018 Dem congressional campaigns were run by women.

@anacaprana @HillaryClinton @BernieSanders @JoeBiden Of the six women candidates running for president only @TulsiGabbard has a woman running her campaign. (Her sister, an unpaid position.)

None of the top polling men in the race have women campaign managers.

@anacaprana @HillaryClinton @BernieSanders @JoeBiden @TulsiGabbard Noteworthy: Beto O’Rourke, Julian Castro, Tom Steyer and Steve Bullock are among the candidates who hired women campaign managers this cycle.

@anacaprana @HillaryClinton @BernieSanders @JoeBiden @TulsiGabbard .@BetoORourke made a splash when he nabbed @jomalleydillon, who served as Barack Obama’s deputy campaign manager in 2012.

@anacaprana @HillaryClinton @BernieSanders @JoeBiden @TulsiGabbard @BetoORourke @jomalleydillon .@BetoORourke's campaign is also notable for ...

– women earning 4 % more than men on average, according to a campaign aide.
– having a "director of women's messaging"
– more than 60 percent of senior managers who are women
