I am readng @fotoole Heroic Failure, followng @edbookfest . It is a fascinatng exploration of t emotional basis of Brexit, based in English self-pity & loss of Empire. All who follow me will know I think cultural narratives are based partly in how citizens wr parented as childrn
2. This passage from @fotoole is important: on Brexit as t “zombie” stage, with “the dead empire appropriating the pain of those it has oppressed”. (pg 24)
3. And here is @fotoole on “the pleasurable self-pity” of the “torment of an eternally unresolved conflict between superiority & inferiority”. (pg 9)
4. I suppose what I am trying to say is that the talk of Brexit is now of t “economic self-harm” we are embarking upon. Brexit is more than that. It is t self-harm that comes from unresolved historic emotional conflict. It is an event that can be read through an ACES/trauma lens.
5. Those leading Brexit will attempt to give us all a narrative of what Brexit is about. It is a narrative that will serve them. If you want to really see what is going on, look for the assignment of BLAME in that narrative. @fotoole : “Looking for someone to blame” (pg 19)
6(end) So here is a reflective questn we cd all be asking ourselves: What happens in the way we are raised in Britain (or England? you decide, as per @fotoole ) that encourages us to buy into easy assignment of blame? What happens in our childhood that sets us up to buy that?
