THREAD: probably going to trigger a lot of my conservative friends but immigration, and a lot of it, isn’t actually as bad as you say it is. All the evidence shows that immigrants are of a net benefit economically and in some aspects, socially too.
So many free market conservatives here are free market on EVERYTHING apart from immigration. I used to be like that too: “controlled migration”, “sensible immigration” which was just a bunch of meaningless sayings.
One of the main arguments people often state is that our schools and hospitals are overcrowded, housing crisis etc. Fact of the matter is, these are all SUPPLY SIDE issues, not demand. If there is an increase in demand for something, you make more of it,
....and frankly with the current abysmal, outdated comprehensive school system, a failing bureaucratic universal healthcare system with shocking patient outcomes, and old, restrictive planning laws, it’s incredibly hard to increase that capacity.
And I’ve never actually understood how the immigration sceptics want to “control” migration fairly. Setting limits to the number of immigrants coming to a country is just so stupid. What’s the right limit and how do you get about it? What if you’re eligible....
...to live and work in the UK but you were the 200,001st person to apply if the limit was 200,000?
In addition, choosing which level of skill come and can’t come to a country is planning an economy. Plain and simple.
I’m not for an absolute open border policy, because I don’t think it’s viable, but I’m for a more liberal one. Of course, there will be a few requirements e.g. speaking English, but my god it’s already difficult to come and work in the UK already, why make it harder?
