1/12
In June 2015, a constitutionally legitimate Parliament decided, by 544 votes to 53 that a binary In/Out, expressed as Remain/Leave, referendum be held on Britain’s #EU membership
2/12
In June 2016, by a majority of over 1 million, and in the biggest democratic mandate for one specific policy in UK political history, the electorate voted in that referendum to Leave.
3/12
That vote to Leave was not qualified in any way,
It was not subject to any conditions.
It was not a vote to Leave only partially.
It was not a vote to Leave in name only,
It was not a vote to leave but only subject to a deal.
It was a vote to just Leave. Full stop.
4/12
In February 2017, a still constitutionally legitimate Parliament decided, by 498 votes to 114, to implement that vote to Leave, by issuing Britain’s Article 50 notification
5/12
In June 2017, the Conservative Party emerged from a General Election as the largest party in Parliament, and was thus constitutionally empowered to form a government
6/12
In July 2019, the Conservative Party elected, in accordance with its own internal constitution and leadership election rules, a new Leader.
7/12
That newly, and legitimately, elected new Leader, as leader of still the largest party in Parliament, was constitutionally empowered to become Prime Minister and form a government.
8/12
That constitutionally legitimate Prime Minister and Government are constitutionally implementing the decision of the electorate in a constitutionally legitimate referendum whose outcome was put into effect by a constitutionally legitimate Parliament
9/12
Notwithstanding 1-8 above, Opposition party leaders who, despite their platitudes to the contrary, remain implacably against any Brexit, not just a No-Deal iteration of it as they claim, will today meet to plot its blocking and preferably its cancellation or reversal
10/12
They propose ousting the current constitutionally legitimate government, to install in its place a mis-named “Government of National Unity” excluding non-Remainers & disenfranchising over 50% of the 2016 referendum electorate, without a scintilla of democratic legitimacy
11/12
Yet they have the gall and hypocrisy to do so under the banner of a #BlockTheCoup hashtag, pretending, in a grotesque inversion of the truth, that theirs is a principled resistance to a constitutionally illegitimate government which itself assumed power in a coup.
12/12
Even by the standards we have come to expect from the democracy-averse Remainer–Left, what they propose is in effect their own coup d'etat , born out of contempt for the electorate, the constitution, and democracy itself
