(1/6) For today’s #TuesdayThoughts I’m shining a light on #marijuana use and its damaging effects on the developing brain. As I have said before—this is NOT your mother’s marijuana—today’s marijuana is at least 3-5x more potent.
(2/6) As a father, and as the nation’s doctor, I am concerned with the number of young adults who have reported using marijuana. Over 9 million youth (12-25 years old) reported #marijuana use in the past month. #NoCannabis4Kids
(3/6) Alarmingly, while youth use of all other illicit substances (except e-cigs) is ⬇️, cannabis use was stable last year. This stagnation—especially w/ ⬆️ #THC potency and delivery is NOT a success. We must take action to safeguard our youth. #NoCannabis4Kids
(4/6) #DYK in states where #marijuana is legal youth believe marijuana is LESS dangerous than other illicit drugs? This misconception coupled w/ ⬆️ access & potency is troubling. I encourage all parents, educators & health professionals to read my advisory bit.ly/SGMJAdvisory
(5/6) Studies have also shown that #marijuana use in pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes for the child, including low birth weight. Every pregnant mother wants their child to be born healthy and harm free. #MJBrainEffects #NoCannabis4Kids
(6/6) My advisory is clear: #Marijuana (or #cannabis to some) contains higher rates of #THC, which can cause intoxication & other developmental harms. NO such intoxicating substance—not alcohol, tobacco, nor illicit opioids—should be used during pregnancy or adolescence.
