We've got a full house for this evening's fringe at #ldconf!

We're discussing reining in the online 'wild west' of political campaigning with @Wera_Hobhouse MP, our own Dr @JessicaJGarland and @kyletaylor from @fairvoteuk with David Howarth as Chair. #LDconf

Acording to David, there are 3 goals of electoral law
1.Limit foreign interference
2.Transparency
3.Cap spending
But digital tools allow bad actors to circumvent all of them

In the UK we allow campaigns to happen then challenge the results afterwards, is that good enough?

MP for Bath @Wera_Hobhouse is asking what sort of democracy we want? One where people are involved and can deliberate with each other #ldconf

We need a better political culture where citizens can judge political adverts for themselves - "the more the people are educated, the more they can look behind advertising tricks"

We now have @kyletaylor introducing the room to the work of @fairvoteuk

"Lots of suggestions for reform sound like they should already be the rules - rather than long and short campaign spending limits, there should be annual limits."

FairVote calling for the removal of maximum fine caps from electoral offences - fines can't just be the cost of doing business
