#INXMedia: Supreme Court judgment on former Union Minister P Chidambaram's bail plea in cases filed by Enforcement Directorate at 10.30 AM today. @htTweets
Chidambaram's arguments:
1. High court had cleared Chidambaram of the triple test for bail, yet denied him bail on the ground that offence alleged was grave. Gravity of offence can be ground to deny bail only in extraordinary cases like terrorist, habitual offender etc.
2. No document or evidence linking Chidambaram to the alleged offence. Only reason he is being portrayed as kingpin is he is Karti Chidambaram's father.
3. Chidambaram also pointed out that all the other accused in the case are either out on bail or have not been arrested.
Central government had countered the submissions stating Chidambaram wields substantial influence over crucial witnesses. They had also stated that economic offences have to be viewed seriously and standards for grant of bail in such cases should be rigorous.
#INXMediaCase: Supreme Court grants bail to P Chidambaram in cases by Enforcement Directorate, sets aside Delhi High Court judgment.
#INXMediacase: Chidambaram to execute Bailbond of Rs. 2 lakh and also produce two sureties.
Chidambaram cannot leave country without permission by special judge.
He should not attempt to influence witnesses or tamper with evidence, holds Supreme Court.
#INXMediaCase: Supreme Court, however, made it clear that aside from triple test for grant of bail, gravity of offence can be a ground to be considered for grant or denial of bail.
It also said that economic offences would fall within the category of grave offences. @htTweets
#INXMediaCase: However, bail cannot be denied in all economic offences and it has to be considered on a case to case basis.
