Further, the idea that people, shorn of both religion and material want, are base animals plumbing the depths and searching for a rule they can violate to make themselves feel alive seems both obvious and validated by subsequent events. 3/
Finally, are we to believe that long-term monogamy, absent any belief system, *doesn’t* lend itself to ennui and fantasy? Do conservatives need to deny this? More importantly, is denying it conducive to successful long-term monogamy? 4/
