/It’s just a reality that every policy that seems to cause extreme harm in plain sight, yet is difficult to uproot, centers around large sums of money, mostly from the government. The rationalization of harm that is going on to protect systems, jobs & profit is astounding.
/ Language is very important when we discuss PEOPLE. It is definitely easier to perpetuate false narratives when you exalt yourself over someone else by labeling them an offender, inmate felon, or perpetrator. #peoplenotprisons
/ Accountability is important, yet elusive within a criminal legal system that leaves no space for healing, restoration and reconciliation. All who enter, both those who have been wronged and those who have caused it, are further damaged.
/ At the end of the day, we are all PEOPLE. Even if accused, incarcerated, supervised or surveilled, this a PERSON going through something. These are mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, etc. There is not a THEY. This is US. #cjreform
/ Most people will come home after incarceration. When they do, it is up to ALL of US to provide FAIR chances for every PERSON to thrive. Jobs. Housing. Opportunity. If not from a humanitarian view, it just makes good fiscal sense. #peoplenotprisons
/The rise of mass incarceration is about US. People didn’t become more violent, worse or inherently evil, our system just started out with a poor design & continued to balloon out of control. People who were not affected, looked the other way. We must reckon with that reality.
/As we look toward a better future, we must amplify voices of ALL those who have been affected. We must tear down institutions & attitudes that perpetuate inequity, racial disparity, labeling & perpetual harm. We owe this to ourselves & our children. #cjreform #wearehuman /END
