Incredible scoop from Gabriel. Corbyn has barely nominated anyone for the upper house. Each of these, all in their own ways, will be controversial.

If Bercow is to take the Lab whip it will be completely extraordinary and unprecedented- many will consider it completely inappropriate. I’d have thought it more likely he’ll be a crossbencher but will still infuriate many Tories who wanted to deny him the customary peerage.

In 2015, Corbyn indicated that he wouldn’t appoint new peers. He and Bercow are pretty close. It seems neither have been able to resist one final shot across the bows. Now over to Boris Johnson and the House authorities...

Of course, we shouldn’t lose sight of the bigger long standing story- our political leaders can give their friends and allies seats in our legislature for life. That’s...pretty odd.

Hearing plenty of annoyed chatter from some on the left that these new Lords appointment sshows the worst of how Corbyn and Corbynism became far too Westminster and part of machine politics. Where once he wanted to abolish now he gives seats in Parliament to mates...
