We filed an update in our suit against State, Justice, and DoD to enforce FOIA requests to get the legal and policy justifications for and communications with Congress about the strike on #QassemSoleimani. More background and the filing here: protectdemocracy.org/update/protect…
Why are we suing? First, the Trump administration has offered shifting explanations for the policy and legal basis of the missile strike and provided a classified War Powers Resolution notification to Congress, which remains hidden from the public.
After last week’s bipartisan vote in the Senate to prohibit military action against Iran without congressional approval, the Trump administration sent over yet another justification for the strike which makes no reference to an imminent attack—the previous justification.
The House could vote on this resolution as soon as next week. Congress and the American people deserve a full accounting for why the President used military force in our name. We are demanding that the government turn over documents before the vote.
For Congress to exercise its role as a representative of the people, the people must be able to provide their reps with their views. But the public can’t provide informed views without access to an unclassified justification for the administration’s military actions.
.@SpeakerPelosi has said that the House will vote on the Senate-passed resolution “in the coming weeks.” The documents Protect Democracy seeks through this lawsuit are directly relevant to congressional debate on this legislation washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
