We’re heading to the Supreme Court TOMORROW to challenge an unconstitutional Louisiana law that would decimate abortion access in the state. This case has far reaching implications that extend beyond Louisiana’s borders. Here’s what you need to know... #MyRightMyDecision
Our case, June Medical Services v. Russo, challenges a medically unnecessary law that requires every abortion provider in Louisiana to obtain “admitting privileges” at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic. #MyRightMyDecision
This would allow abortion providers to admit patients to the hospital. But, abortion patients almost never require hospitalization bc abortion is so safe. It’s safer than a colonoscopy or getting your wisdom teeth removed. Neither of these procedures require admitting privileges.
Admitting privileges are nearly impossible to obtain, especially in states like Louisiana that are hostile to abortion. Hospitals can deny privileges for any reason, including fear of backlash and harassment from anti-abortion extremists. This is a serious concern in Louisiana.
Despite claims from anti-abortion state legislators, this law provides ZERO medical benefits to patients. Its true purpose? Prevent abortion providers from treating patients, shut down abortion clinics, and eliminate access to abortion care entirely. #MyRightMyDecision
Major medical groups like @AmerMedicalAssn and @acog oppose this restriction because it does nothing to protect patient health, but instead blocks access to constitutionally protected health care services. #MyRightMyDecision
This law is blatantly unconstitutional, and Louisiana knows it. State lawmakers modeled it after a Texas restriction that had "tremendous success" in shutting down clinics in the state before the Supreme Court struck it down in 2016. #MyRightMyDecision
If #SCOTUS allows this law to take effect, all but one clinic in Louisiana will be forced to close, leaving just one doctor to provide abortion care for the one million women of reproductive age who currently reside there. #MyRightMyDecision
And that’s just the beginning. The impacts of the Court’s decision will extend far beyond Louisiana’s borders. If the law takes effect, states will feel emboldened to pass more extreme restrictions to decimate abortion access and defy #SCOTUS precedents with which they disagree.
The stakes of this case are enormous. The Court’s decision will have serious implications for the future of abortion access and the rule of law itself. But we were made for this moment, and we won’t let it slip away. We know you won't either. #MyRightMyDecision
Join us tomorrow as we fight at the Supreme Court to protect abortion access for millions of Americans. If you can’t make it to our rallies in DC or New Orleans, make some noise online by sharing what #MyRightMyDecision means to you: bit.ly/MyRightMyDecis…
