Interesting client. She has seen 1 psychiatrist and 2 therapists and was not satisfied with them.
She: All #therapists are such @R$eholes.
Me: Why?
She:They are so full of themselves
Me: Go on....
She:I know more than them
Me: I noticed that
She:Tell me what is DBT
Me:Show me
And that broke the ice.
I am just so glad that I wl be working with her - this one is going to challenge me, make me reach deep within myself. Not many clients make you do that.
Quite looking forward to just listening and facilitating + the occasional challenge thrown her way.
She raised an imp point though. Many therapists focus too much on their own agenda, method, theoretical favorites etc despite clear evidence that a client's inner world is the best place to start things off fm. We need to 1st tune in to discover which approach works w/ which client.
The other thing which often strikes me is how so many clients seem to "google" to self-diagnose & label themselves. Often, the shallow knowledge [labels and therapy models] gleaned off the net comes in the way of their own recovery - 'coz, it's only in doing that a thing is done.
wrt tweets abv, it then creates a real challenge for many #therapists who may be shallow, untrained, insecure. They feel threatened & end up talking more, proving more...sessions become more like a lecture thn a facilitated co-discovery process.
"Too full of thmslvs" as she said.
And that leads to the old joke from the world of #psychotherapy : It is often difficult to decipher, between the therapist and the client, who needs whom more 😀
