When NhRP Communications Director @LaurenChoplin was in first grade, she and her two sisters pleaded with their parents to let them keep a dog they'd found on the street and brought home in a wheelbarrow. After no one claimed the dog at the shelter, their parents relented.
At first, the dog peed on the carpet and chased the cats, worrying Lauren's parents. However, with time and lots of love, Molly quickly adjusted to life in her new household.
One of Lauren's most vivid childhood memories is of crouching on the floor alone with Molly, who'd become ill, and imagining she could use her hands and tears to magically take away Molly's sickness.
Fortunately, thanks to a stellar veterinarian, Molly lived for many more happy years after that moment, but Lauren never forgot it.
Today, Lauren lives in Portland, Oregon with her rescued canine companion Strider, who's a lot like Molly.
Like everyone at the NhRP, she feels a deep kinship w/the many people who've become NhRP supporters in part b/c they've felt powerless to help an animal who is suffering & are eager for real legal change in terms of how members of other species are viewed & treated under the law.
Is there an experience from your childhood that you connect to your support for nonhuman #animalrights? If so, we'd love to read about it in the comments! Photos encouraged. 😎
