I believe this game is considered a parallel universe to the original one, and the whole thing about defeating the whispers is to allow the history to change.
This could explain Cloud’s visions of stuff that didn’t happen yet, including Aerith’s death scene (which only appears for a second, but seeing that materia bouncing makes me cry instantly)
Also before defying the Whispers, Aerith seems to know her fate and because of that says to Cloud “don’t fall in love with me”. She knows!
But after defeating the whispers I believe they are changing the timeline and now maybe we have a chance that Aerith will live! In that sense FFVIIR is not only a remake but also a “sequel” as those flashbacks only make sense if you played the original.
