NEW: Today we released a new report showing that in the United States, a Black person is 3.6x more likely to get arrested for marijuana possession than a white person. #420day aclu.org/marijuana-repo…
This is an update to our unprecedented national report from 2013, The War on Marijuana in Black and White, which detailed millions of arrests for marijuana-related offenses and staggering racial bias in the enforcement of marijuana-related laws.
Since 2013, nine states and Washington, D.C. have legalized and 10 states have decriminalized marijuana possession.
Despite growing support for legalization, we found:
1️⃣The nationwide war on marijuana rages on
2️⃣There are fewer arrests in states that legalized or decriminalized
3️⃣Extreme racial disparities in marijuana arrests persist
4️⃣Legalization is still the answer, but it's not enough
It’s past time that we not just legalize marijuana, but do so in a way that tackles racial disparities head-on.
The MORE Act will do just that.
This #420day, tell your representatives to pass the most comprehensive marijuana reform bill in Congress. action.aclu.org/send-message/s…
