During #MothersDay family call this wknd, my mother expressed gratitude for @SpeakerPelosi, who fought hard to protect Chinese students in America who had participated in solidarity protests with the Tiananmen Square movement in 1989.

My mother had actually met my father at one of the pro-democracy demonstrations in the US that summer. My father, who was in the US on a graduate student visa, would have had to return to China for 2 yrs before being eligible to apply for US residency under rules at the time.
@SpeakerPelosi successfully advocated to waive the foreign residency requirement and to establish residency for Chinese students who were in the US at the time. This protected my father, who having participated in US-based demonstrations could have been at risk of persecution.
Rep. Pelosi has been a staunch voice on behalf of human rights in China + China-controlled regions for three decades, extending through to her leadership in extending support to the ongoing Hong Kong protests and responding to further government crackdowns there in recent weeks.
Pelosi comes under lots of criticism on Twitter, esp from those disenchanted w the "Democratic establishment", etc.
Yet her contributions too often go ignored. Her advocacy for human rights in China has been commendable and is deeply appreciated by this Chinese-American family.
