Crucial debate today in plenary about the emergency law in Hungary, where depsite the #COVIDー19 limitations, MEPs from all political groups, including Hungarians, could share their views on recent developments.
Many MEPs voiced that what is happening in Hungary is a further step towards authoritarianism, that the checks and balances included in the emergency law are useless as they have been hollowed out by 10 years of undermining the #RuleOfLaw...
...that many measures taken by the gvt have nothing to do w/ the fight against #COVIDー19, such as the resolution rejecting the #IstanbulConvention, limiting the rights of Trans people, threatening the media, arresting citizens who voiced their opinions on social media, etc.
Therefore, no, this is not a political witch hunt or yet another debate pushed by the left liberals as #Orban & his far-right allies say, this is a legitimate open discussion b/w the elected officials of the 🇪🇺 people on a subject of crucial importance for the Union.
And many of them, inlc @EPPGroup members called for resolute action by @EU_Commission & @EUCouncil.
Gvts like Orbán's do not deserve EU funds. But 🇭🇺 local councils, NGOs & media do! Time to be strong on conditionality & introduce direct mgnt by EC when gvt is subject to art 7!
