Exciting webinar starting now at

Hear about the Lockdown Diaries and the politics of food parcels. I will live-tweet.

Dr Phillan Zamchiya of @PLAASuwc outlines the repressive #COVID19 response of the Zimbabwean state, which has been destroying poor people's property in the informal sector, especially market stalls. Women selling fresh produce have been hardest hit. Critics have been imprisoned.

Zamchiya: 7.7 million Zimbabweans are in urgent need of #foodaid. Rise in 'lawfare' as citizens take state to court. Also there's a 'midnight economy' where people are milling, manufacturing and selling at night. Compliance with the lockdown is becoming more and more impossible.

Dr Fiona Anciano: The Lockdown Diaries: every 2 days 70 people in Cape Town's RDP areas, informal settlements, occupied buildings are reporting.
Finding: about half have high levels of trust in government; half very low trust, few in middle. We are seeing political polarisation.

Thapelo Mohapi @NdifunaUkwazi @ReclaimCT says ANC government is out of touch with what's happening on the ground. The moratorium on evictions hasn't been enforced. People have been shot with live ammunition. Brutality, repression and evictions. @CovidCoalition

Mohapi: there's evidence of partisan abuse of food parcels and food distribution, including by ward councillors. Trust is being eroded. Alternatives are emerging. Abahlali BaseMjondolo and the Khayelitsha CAN are community-based volunteer groups involved with food distribution.
