This week’s #CrisisandtheOpportunity forum is focusing on the struggle of workers. You can join the live stream here: facebook.com/PAStandsUp/vid…

Healthcare workers are not only risking their lives to the virus, they’re also facing down the indifference of their bosses and the violent rhetoric and weapons of their own neighbors.

“What does it mean to take this virus home to our loved ones?” -a constant worry of the essential worker “heroes” whose labor is not valued enough for paid sick leave, PPE, or hazard pay #CrisisandtheOpportunity

“They care about what our labor can produce but they don’t care about our health or the health of our families.”

“Two things are new about this moment: (1) essential worker idea is making its way into law and politics and is a real social construct in our lives, and (2) the bar is so much lower in our society for whether direct action is reasonable and necessary.” This is our moment!

“We have two big classes of workers right now who are divided in their needs: the folks working on the front lines and the WFH worker.” If you work from home, you have a moral obligation to fight for the other group. That’s your neighbor, friend, and family member.

“You think my death is in my job description.” Wow. #CrisisandtheOpportunity

“Almost 14 million workers nationally, 300k in PA were facing a crisis before this pandemic because of the National Restaurant Association.” The tipped wage was the continuation of white supremacy, after the end of slavery. A tip to mouth crisis.

In addition to the racist history of the tipped wage, a policy the Pennsylvania legislature has failed to reform, this system forces workers to endure hours of sexual harassment for pay, and MANY OF THEM MAKE TOO LITTLE TO GET UNEMPLOYMENT.

Who out there has gotten their stimulus check? The person writing this tweet hasn’t. How many of you are still waiting for unemployment from March?

Politicians keep talking about “getting back to work”, and in addition to the real dangers during this pandemic, so many workers were being dehumanized on a daily basis for the extraction of their labor. We need a paycheck guarantee and an overhaul of the entire economy.

Even the non-union workers are starting to organize. #CrisisandtheOpportunity
