Participated in Workshop on ‘Saving Biodiversity through Effective Waste Management’ event on the occasion of #WorldEnvironmentDay2020 organised by my Ministry.
The three key advisories to States/ ULBs on Material Recovery Facilities for Municipal Solid Waste, Landfill Reclamation and Consultative Document on On-site & Off- site Sewage Management Practices were released in the Workshop.
But for 48 cities in WB, rest of urban areas are ODF now. Scientific processing of solid waste, which was mere 18% in 2014, has more than tripled & is now 65%. However, there is still a long way to go.
The documents released today are an effort to find & facilitate sustainable solutions to some of the key problems hindering holistic sanitation and solid waste management. We still need to focus on various components of solid waste management.
We need to reiterate the idea of holistic sanitation including wastewater treatment not just through the creation of infrastructure but through capacity building & behavioural change.
We are committed to conserving all forms of life on earth. This can only happen when we take the mandate of Swachhata forward & truly unlock the potential of 3Rs, circular & blue economy with citizens’ full involvement and commitment.
