Watching the BED masterclass at #ICED2020 & a 1 sentence summary: we’re treating binge eating disorder w/ weight loss.

My heart breaks at the state of the ED field where we prescribe weight loss for some ED patients while throwing others in the hospitals for the same behaviors.

When our patients come in wanting to lose weight, we can empathize and meet them where they’re at without colluding. Of course they want to lose weight when we live in a world filled with weight stigma. #ICED2020

Marginalizations. Racism. Weight stigma. Socioeconomic status. Trauma. These all impact health negatively.

But let’s focus on weight loss at any costs and blame all medical issues on weight instead of all these other things that cause medical issues.

Reminder that almost all people with BED restrict. And not only that, so many of our patients start with one ED and go to another, swinging back and forth throughout their lifetime.

And none of the time should the ED be treated with weight loss. NONE OF THE TIME.
