Every time I get on a plane, I feel absolutely sick to my stomach — terrified that the person sitting next to me will take a picture of me and I’ll end up being mocked on the internet.
Put your anger on the airlines for making seats smaller & smaller.
Interesting how it’s never a picture of a really tall person impeding the other person’s space.
Instead, we are supposed to be discuss whether a fat person deserves basic humanity and dignity.

I don’t talk about my experience growing up ultra orthodox because so many people I still love are part of the community and it never felt right.
But I don’t want to be quiet anymore.
Yesterday, a bunch of religious men had a huge gathering where they told religious women that they shouldn’t be on social media anymore.
Today on FB, a Jewish org of men stated that they “welcome the Supreme Court ruling.”

If you need to eat this Yom Kippur because you’re in ED recovery, please know that eating is not just permissible, but a MITZVAH.
Your connection & spirituality happens through eating, not restricting. Hashem doesn’t want you to be harming yourself in the name of religion.
Obviously, please confirm with a treatment team + Rabbi who understands eating disorders and mental health. But your mental and physical health comes first. 💗

I used to be concerned that sharing my negative experiences in ED treatment would be harmful to people attempting to get help.
But no more beating around the bush. ED treatment is built for thin, rich white women and it’s a broken system that doesn’t work.
I said what I said.
I’m not trying to be an asshole but until treatment is created for ALL people in mind, more people will continue to be harmed and retraumatized in treatment.
Black people, trans people, fat people... they deserve safe care. And the current system does not provide that.

When I was around 19 & roughly the weight I am now,I went to an endocrinologist bec my RD & I couldn’t figure out why I was my size given how I ate.
(Spoiler alert: body diversity is a thing but my ED RD wasn’t aware)
It was also the only period of recovery I’d ever experienced
TW calories
The endo forced me on the scale after I pleaded not to &then said I had 2 options.I could get WLS or I could eat less than 1k cal a day w 1 hour vigorous exercise daily.
Yes, she was aware of my ED of 10 yrs (at that pt) that I was was just starting to recover from

Okay... we need to talk about what happens when a fat influencer goes on a weight loss journey.
The influencer always defends it as a “wellness journey” and says this is really about their health.
If it were truly about health, why continue to conflate the false notion that smaller=healthier?
This perpetuates the classic trope that fat people must gorge themselves all day

The more you attempt to control your eating, the more out of control you will likely feel around food.
Bingeing isn’t a weakness, a flaw or a willpower issue.
It’s a natural response to restriction & likely means that you’re not eating enough.
Some people think, “But I’m not restricting so why am I still bingeing?”
So let me remind you that mental restriction has the same impact of restriction
Are u feeling guilty when u eat?Think u should be dieting?Trying to eat a specific portion size?Think certain foods are bad?

This is the best thing I’ve ever seen on the internet. So much bravery. So much courage. I’m inspired. 😜
@roseybeeme articulated the problem with the “same body different pose” trend on instagram so perfectly:

Are you trying to be healthy or are you just trying to be thin?
A family member told me that they’re contemplating WLS to be healthy. So stomach amputation rather than adding movement, more fruits & veggies, eating regularly, getting more sleeping more - all things they could really do that would actually benefit their health.

Me: Cauliflower pizza is a crime against humanity.
The internet: OMG I’m gluten intolerant and you’re allergy shaming! And I actually PREFER the taste of it. You’re taste shaming me! Wow you’re such a hater. UNFOLLOWING because I don’t associate with such negativity.
Me: Stop demonizing entire food groups.
Internet: So what you’re saying is that people should only eat donuts?? Omg what’s wrong with you??

When people say “there’s room for all of us in the body positive movement” in response to people having negative reactions to size 6 people hunching over to show their stomach folds....
Uh no, no there is not. There is no room for my fat friends that need it most.
I get the need to normalize bodies & I get that we all deserve to be seen. But this trend continues to shove people in larger bodies out of the picture once again.
Their photos aren’t met with “omg you’re so brave and inspiring.” It’s met with “bitch you’re promoting ob*sity.”

Thinking of eating disorders as a vanity issue or diet gone wrong is a completely inaccurate way of looking at this deadly mental illness.
The people I know struggling with eating disorders are some of the kindest, most selfless, and special humans I know.
People develop eating disorders for a multitude of reasons. Most commonly, we can think of it like biology loading the gun and environment pulling the trigger.

Let’s talk about the thin outrage that happens every time we talk about the problems of centering #bodypositivity on a size 6 woman hunched over to the show a stomach fold, blowing up in internet fame, & everyone says, “omg you’re so BRAVE!”
But body positivity is for EVERYONE.
No, body positivity is most certainly NOT for everyone.
Do you know what happens when a fat person posts a picture in the same bikini or maybe is just...existing in a picture online?
They’re sent death threats and told they’re promoting ob*sity.... for literally existing.

When I talk about eating all foods freely being important for eating disorder recovery and the sugarphobes come out of the woodworks to tell me that sugar is poisonous, destroys the gut micriobiome and causes violent mood swings. 😂 So MuCh ScIeNcE.
You know what’s REALLY bad for your gut micriobiome? Stress, poverty, inability to access enough food...
But sure, please tell me how you make an organic coconut ice cream instead of addressing food deserts and impacts of racism and poverty on health.

“You just need to make the CHOICE to love yourself and ignore the haters.”
I see this concept posted time and time again by fellow thin clinicians and here’s what I have to say:
When your body is the reason you can’t access medical treatment, when your body is the reason you can’t access fertility treatment, when your body is the reason you are paid less& on the receiving end of abuse & death threats,we are talking about a lot more than just love yourself

If you’re posting before & after weight loss photos, insisting that anyone will find a reason to be triggered no matter what, you can delude yourself as much as you want but in posting those pictures you are upholding white supremacy telling us that only smaller bodies are worthy
If you need that praise so desperately, praise for making your body smaller, why?
At the expense of letting your fat friends know that you are relieved you no longer look like them?

Watching the BED masterclass at #ICED2020 & a 1 sentence summary: we’re treating binge eating disorder w/ weight loss.
My heart breaks at the state of the ED field where we prescribe weight loss for some ED patients while throwing others in the hospitals for the same behaviors.
When our patients come in wanting to lose weight, we can empathize and meet them where they’re at without colluding. Of course they want to lose weight when we live in a world filled with weight stigma. #ICED2020

If you’re struggling with body image while simultaneously being passionate about body liberation for all, it doesn’t make you a hypocrite.
#Bodypositivity on social media has become synonymous with thin, white girls hunching over to show a singular stomach roll and while that may be powerful for some people, it’s certainly not a requirement for body positivity.
