2/ Even though President Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863 and the Confederate general, Robert E. Lee, had surrendered in April 1865, some enslaved people in Texas weren’t aware that they were free until June of that year.

3/ The major general of the Union Army, Gordon Granger, arrived in Texas with the news on June 18. The following day, he announced the emancipation of enslaved Black people.
