Hi. I had #PTSD from my time covering conflict. But I’d like to highlight on #PTSDAwarenessDay the link between racism and PTSD. google.com/amp/s/www.psyc…

‘Events that can cause racial trauma include threats of harm and injury, humiliating and shaming events and witnessing racial discrimination and microaggressions.’ google.com/amp/s/amp.cour…

‘Many ethnic and racial groups experience higher rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as compared to White Americans. ‘ apa.org/pubs/highlight…

This impacts black and brown CHILDREN too. labblog.uofmhealth.org/rounds/protect…

‘Most people, after a trauma, don’t get PTSD. Their minds know how to heal from it. But most people with PTSD have experienced multiple traumas. People accumulate trauma until they reach a breaking point, and it’s the same with racism.’blogs.webmd.com/webmd-intervie…

On #PTSDAwarenessDay please know that systemic racism has wide reaching impacts including on mental health. And black and brown communities in particular struggle to get mental health help. npr.org/sections/healt…

One more thing, #PTSD should not carry a stigma. It’s your mind trying to deal with repeated trauma. If you are struggling (which let’s face it many of us are) take care of yourself and also ask for understanding from others. And get help if you can and give help if you can.
