He starts as a helper. That’s just how he’s wired. But he always seeks relationships and connection. He fantasizes about love. Loving others and being loved.
Then EVE shows up. He has true feelings for her, but... and this critical for understanding the 2... he tends to her needs in a desperate, almost smothering way because he expects affection in return. He craves it and he tries to earn it by doing good things.
Wall-E’s journey is about true altruism. He always had a desire to serve others, but he didn’t know how to do it without centering himself and his unmet need for love. “Love me! Don’t you see what I do for you?”
In the end, he’s willing to sacrifice everything for the good of others... the cause, the mission, the greater good... receiving nothing in return. True selflessness.
And yes... this is basically about me. Wall-E ALWAYS makes me cry because I feel seen.
