The Ministry of Defence in response to the Central Information Commission stated that there are no procedures, norms or standards in deciding prosecution sanction under the Armed Forces (Jammu and Kashmir) Special Powers Act (AFSPA). (2/5)

The Ministry's response only confirms the truth, that AFSPA is an abusive law that feeds a cycle of impunity for human rights violations. To date, not a single member of the security forces deployed in the state has been tried for human rights violations in a civilian court.(3/5)

The central government has denied permission, or ‘sanction’, to prosecute security force personnel under AFSPA, or has kept the decision pending for years. (4/5)

.@AIIndia found that in most cases, families of the victims are not provided any information related to the sanction requests in the cases. The long-standing problem of impunity in the region must end now. (5/5)
