Mexico is a world-leader in constitutional protection for free speech. Unfortunately, it forgot this protection when it hastily passed a new copyright law as part of Donald Trump's #USMCA treaty.

The new law mandates automated, unthinking, indiscriminate copyright filters that will disappear your speech in an instant and make you get in line for years to have it reinstated.

It creates protections for digital locks that allow foreign corporations to take away your books, decide whether your own code can run on your devices, and even tell you whether your family is a real family or not.

But even if you can avoid the filter and even if you can get your device's permission to express yourself, you can still be censored with impunity.

Under Mexico's new notice-and-takedown rules, any time someone accuses you of copyright infringement, your service provider has to remove your content, even if the claim is obviously fraudulent.

5/9

Worse still: the system allows anyone who claims - without evidence - that their copyright was violated to demand your personal information.

6/9

That's a gift to gangsters, stalkers, and corrupt officials who want to track down and terrorize people who criticize them online.

7/9

Who would speak out against corruption if they faced this kind of risk?

Mexico's constitution guarantees expansive free expression to the Mexican people. This law is incompatible with that obligation. Mexico's National Commission for Human Rights MUST overturn this law!
