Picking out this tweet from this entire thread, which is interesting. The empowerment challenge was probs just a fluffy low-stakes way for women to gas each other up & not co-opted from a Turkish femicide awareness campaign. BUT now we know more about domestic violence in Turkey.

I’m glad someone I love asked me to post a pic. I didn’t ask anyone I love to post a pic because I didn’t want to annoy anyone, which in turn probably hurt people who felt disincluded. I’m sad but eager to learn more about the situation in Turkey & help if I can.

I think, yes, you could feel like black & white selfies are narcissistic, (all selfies are narcissistic?) or that selfies (taking space & being seen) are sometimes self-empowering while probably not doing tons of global good. But I did like seeing lots of faces in my TL!

You could feel like an idiot & beat yourself up for not knowing that there was a potential Turkish connection to the chain mail request you got, or you could just read up on the situation in Turkey & do what you can to help.

You could use that bit of information you heard about Turkey to criticize women who participated in something you thought was stupid, whether that’s accurate or not, or you could take action to help women in Turkey. Maybe you have time to do both!

Either way, it’s an interesting situation where it seems like lots of things can be true at once & I’m sure most of us probably won’t learn a thing from it, but I hope I do! I’ll let you know. Glad I read that thread mostly because I found some interesting peeps to follow on it.

And if you know of a good Turkish domestic violence charity, shout it out! Because that would actually be productive. (I’m researching myself, but maybe you have been donating to a Turkish org for ages & can make a good rec?)

This has been a long-ass edition of Caissie Unsolicited But Hopefully Nuanced Takes! (If you posted a pic, I loved seeing your face. Thank you for liking mine. I deleted it.)
