How do power & capitalism intersect w/ the distribution of academic knowledge? This is an issue @DrJessTaylor & I discussed in a recent episode #TigersAndTeddies. I've had lots of questions since. COVID briefings have raised public curiosity further. So here's a THREAD.

2. The financial inequity of academic publishing is under scrutiny. This 2019 article is one of the best I know to summarise the issues. "When science is locked behind paywalls, it means cancer patients can’t easily read the research on their conditions." vox.com/the-highlight/…

3. “Until we have enough academics who are willing to do something different, then I don’t see a big change happening [in how scientific results are published & made available to the public].” vox.com/the-highlight/…

4. "Who owns academic research online?" This is the kind of question @DrJessTaylor & I explored in our conversation. This article gives a clear sense of the determination it can take to get academic research out to the wider public. theverge.com/2018/2/8/16985…

5. Scientists themselves are discussing the issue of: Who owns scientific knowledge? 2013: "My frustration lies w/ leaders of the science community for not recognizing that open access is a perfectly viable way to do publishng." nature.com/news/open-acce…

6. The mainstream press sometimes also picks up the question: "Should all research papers be free?" This from 2016 in New York TImes. nytimes.com/2016/03/13/opi…

7/end. I hope it is helpful to have highlighted t role of power & capitalism in t creation of knowledge. COVID is increasing the public's awareness of how important this issue is. BREXIT is going to make that question even sharper. theconversation.com/coronavirus-sh…
