11th AUGUST: ST PHILOMENA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR

1. On 25 May, 1802, during the quest for the graves of Roman martyrs in the Catacomb of Priscilla, a tomb was discovered and opened; as it contained a glass vessel

2. it was assumed to be the grave of a martyr. The remains were those of a young maiden.

On 8 June, 1805, the relics were translated to the church of Mungano, Diocese of Nola.

The earthenware plates were fixed in front of the grave as follows: LUMENA PAX TECUM FI.

3. The plates were evidently inserted in the wrong order, and the inscription should doubtless read PAX TECUM FILUMENA.

The letters are painted on the plates with red paint, dating from about the middle or second half of the second century. Apart from the letters, the plates

4. contain well-known Christian symbols.

Several miracles were credited to Philomena's intercession, including the healing of Pauline Jaricot in 1835, which received wide publicity. St John Vianney attributed to her intercession the extraordinary cures that others attributed

5. to himself.
In 1833, a Neapolitan nun reported that Philomena had appeared in a vision to her, and had revealed that she was martyred at 13 years of age by Diocletian, who was Roman Emperor from 284 to 305.
From 1837 to 1961, celebration of her liturgical feast was approved

6. for some places, but was never included in the General Roman Calendar for universal use.
