TAKSHASHILA UNIVERSITY
Takshashila university was established around 1000 BCE. Before the partition, the university was located in India but the city is now in the Rawalpindi District of Punjab, Pakistan.
Renowned for medicine and arts, Religious texts and the Vedas were

also taught at the University.
Students came to Takshashila primarily to reach the end of their knowledge; to study a specific discipline which took around 8 years. When the teachers were satisfied with their students’ level of achievements and knowledge;

studies terminated and Gurudakshina was usually expected at the completion of a student’s studies. Teachers at Takshashila believed in knowledge rather than just exams and hence no degree was provided.
Panini, the grammarian who codified the rules for Sanskrit

language was also associated with Takshashila University.
Chandragupta Maurya was also taught here by Chanakya.
The Ayurvedic healer, Charaka also studied here.

Takshashila saw many invasions and destructions but the final blow was from Hunas in the 5th century.
